Obituary

Barbara Jean Sawer, 85, passed away on Thursday, February 12, 2026, in Hendersonville, Tennessee. Born July 8, 1940, in McCook, Nebraska, she was the daughter of the late Frank Munger Sawer and Dorothy B. Sommers Sawer. A distinguished and dedicated professional, Barbara contributed significantly to the field of youth development through her work with Oregon State University Extension as a 4-H state youth development specialist from 1974 to 1995.

Throughout her career, Barbara garnered numerous accolades for her outstanding dedication to empowering young people. In 2015, she was inducted into the Oregon 4-H Hall of Fame, followed by her induction into the National 4-H Hall of Fame in 2023, recognizing her exceptional commitment to the 4-H program. The National Association of Extension 4-H Agents honored her with a distinguished service award in 1984, acknowledging her impactful contributions to the organization. This was complemented by a 25-year award in 1993 and a national diversity award in 2001, underscoring her advocacy for inclusion within the 4-H community.

Barbara was not only a respected leader but also an early pioneer in program evaluation both in Oregon and on a national level. Her notable work, encapsulated in her 1984 book, "Evaluating for Accountability: A Practical Guide for the Inexperienced Evaluator," became an essential reference for 4-H and Extension program evaluation. Her expertise led to numerous invitations to present at national and international conferences, further solidifying her status as a thought leader in her field.

In pursuit of knowledge, Barbara earned her bachelor’s degree from Kansas State University, followed by a master’s degree from Montana State University, and culminated her academic journey with a doctorate from the University of British Columbia.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brother Kermit Munger Sawer.

Barbara is survived by her beloved sister, Beverly Sawer-Smith adn her husband Curtis. Her legacy as a champion of youth development and a mentor to countless individuals will continue to inspire future generations.

In keeping with Barbara's wishes, she will be cremated and her ashes will be placed in Atwood Fairview Cemetery in Atwood, Kansas.
