Darrell W. Fleming, a dedicated public servant and beloved member of his community, passed away on Saturday, May 2, 2026, in Gallatin, Tennessee. Born March 10, 1953, in Jeffersonville, Indiana, he was the son of the late Woodrow Fleming and Viola Borders Fleming. Darrell's life was marked by commitment, intelligence, and an enduring spirit of kindness that left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
A proud graduate of Gallatin High School's Class of 1971, Darrell furthered his education by earning a master’s degree from Western Kentucky University. During his time at WKU, he was an active member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity, embodying the values of brotherhood and leadership that would define his personal and professional life.
Darrell devoted 34 years to the Hendersonville Fire Department, where he served with distinction and unwavering dedication. Rising through the ranks to retire as Fire Marshal, his career was characterized by hard work, humility, and a steadfast commitment to the safety and well-being of his community. His colleagues and neighbors alike remember him as a man who saw the good in everyone, always wearing a smile and approaching every challenge with an exemplary attitude.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Darrell found joy in simpler pleasures. He was passionate about tinkering, enjoying the satisfaction of working with his hands to understand and improve the mechanics of everyday objects. His love for log cabins was a cherished part of his life, highlighted by the long-standing retreat he maintained on Dale Hollow Lake, which served as a peaceful haven and a place for creating lasting memories.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings Rose Hodges, Lynda Crabtree and Woody Fleming; and stepdaughter Mary Key.
Darrell is survived by his devoted wife, Teresa Fleming; his son, Judd (Teri) Herder; his daughter, Malorie (Benjamin) Marcus and stepdaughter Jesse High. He also leaves behind grandchildren who brought joy and pride into his life: Evan Herder, Ella Herder, Ethan Marcus, Emily Marcus, Danielle Bogle, Zoie High, Jacob Balentine, and Chris Balentine. His family remembers him as a loving presence whose intelligence, kindness, and great attitude inspired them daily.
In honor of Darrell’s legacy, a visitation will be held at the Alexander Funeral Home & Cremation Center, located at 584 Nashville Pike in Gallatin, Tennessee. The visitation will begin on Wednesday, May 6, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., continuing the following day from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The funeral service officiated by Dennis Allen will follow on Thursday, May 7, at 12:00 p.m. at the same location.
Darrell’s passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of his family, friends, and community.
