Dr. George Coles

Dr. George Coles, known affectionately as ‘Doc’ to his community, began life in the modest streets of Bishopstoke, England, on July 17, 1942, with aspirations far bigger than his circumstances. His dream to become a US citizen carried him across oceans, into battle, and ultimately to a legacy of healing and service in Gallatin, Tennessee, where he passed away on August 21, 2025, at the age of 83.

Leaving school with only an eighth-grade education, George’s determination and intellect shone through. After serving in the United States Marine Corps in Vietnam, he leveraged the GI Bill to gain entry to the University of Texas at Arlington through special testing, a testament to his self-taught knowledge and unwavering ambition. His journey culminated in earning a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Texas A&M University in 1973, a remarkable achievement for a man from such humble beginnings.

George opened his small animal practice in Gallatin, Tennessee, in 1977. His dedication to animal care led to the establishment of Countryside Veterinary Hospital, a cornerstone of the community. After retiring, George continued to serve animals by volunteering at A Safe Place for Animals and consulting with veterinary practices including his final work with Dr. Towns in Hartsville and Lafayette, Tennessee. His passion for veterinary medicine brought him great fulfillment until the end of his career.

George was preceded in death by his parents, Alice Mable Owen and Wilfred (Alfred) Charles Coles, his sisters Janet Phillips and Christine Whatmore. He is survived by his daughters, Jessica Coles Kennedy (Ryan) and Logan Coles; his granddaughter, Riley Kennedy; and his niece Mary Phillips.

A man from humble beginnings that made an extraordinary life for himself serving within his community. A courageous man, brilliant veterinarian, father and friend who will be missed by all who knew him. His legacy lives through the countless lives - human and animal – he touched.
