Obituary

Age 85, John L. “Jack” Erickson left this earth for his Eternal Home on May 10, 2026.

Jack was born on December 20, 1940, in Litchfield, Minnesota, to the late John R. and Nellie Erickson. He was a graduate of Dassel High, David Lipscomb College, and Middle Tennessee State University, where he earned a master’s degree in education.

His Bachelor’s degree in Bible from Lipscomb served him well as he spent many years regularly serving as the minister for the beloved Beech Grove Church of Christ, in Jackson County, TN and other churches throughout the region. Jack retired from teaching in Sumner County, TN - a well known and loved “out of the box” teacher of mostly 3rd grade.

A man of infinite talents, Jack spent his life in service to others. He built energy-efficient homes in the 70s before it was trendy. His passions for photography, flying, beekeeping, and making furniture all provided outlets for his service and connection to others. Jack spent his retirement years working alongside Lisa, attending garden shows throughout the country, and selling his beautiful furniture creations. Jack and Lisa enjoyed finding quaint coffee shops wherever they traveled.

Jack was a man of quiet faith, leading by example, and leaving behind a legacy of faith, creativity, hard work, and quiet strength. Jack is best remembered as the embodiment of 1 Thessalonians 4:11: “Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your hands.”

In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his brothers Robin and Butch, sister DeeDee, and his father-at-heart Bertram C. Shearer.

Jack is survived by his wife of nearly 36 years, Lisa; children, Michelle (Mark) Hackney, David (Lori) Erickson, Simon (Carol) Lynn, Phillip (Christine) Lynn, and John Lynn; grandchildren, Emma and Griffin Erickson, and Holland and Hazel Lynn. He is also survived by his brother Rick (Christine) Erickson; sister, Malissa (Mike) Sheppard; and a host of extended family.

The family will honor Jack’s memory with a graveside service at Sumner Memorial Gardens on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at 3:00 PM.
