Gallatin

James Melvin Stroud, age 68, of Gallatin, Tennessee, passed away on Sunday, November 30, 2025. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fenton M. Stroud and Anna P. Stroud. Melvin lived a life defined by music, service to others, and unwavering devotion to the people he loved.

Melvin built an extraordinary career in the music industry as a professional drummer. As a drummer and band manager, he toured with Janie Fricke (CMA Female Vocalist of the Year in 1982 and 1983, and ACM Top Female Vocalist in 1983), the Alabama Band, the Oak Ridge Boys, and many others, performing on some of the most iconic stages in the country. His career highlights included playing at Camp David for President George H. W. Bush and President Ronald Reagan, appearing on The Tonight Show, and performing on multiple televised Grand Ole Opry shows. He also performed in major coliseums, arenas, and leading outdoor events across the nation, many of them sold out twice in a single day. His professionalism, talent, and character made him a trusted and respected presence throughout the music community.

Beyond touring life, Melvin was an accomplished entrepreneur and businessman. He owned and operated a sound and lighting company, music stores, and recording studios, developed road cases and professional speaker systems, and worked extensively as a consultant, business manager, and salesman. His expertise and integrity earned the confidence of everyone who worked with him. In his later years, he worked as a certified hospital security guard and in patient care roles, where he made many friends and was valued for his kindness and reliability. In his spare time, he kept his passion for music alive, continuing to write and perform original songs with his brother Allen.

Melvin had a remarkable capacity to help others. No matter the time, circumstance, or challenge, he was the person you could call, and he would show up. He inspired everyone around him, often reminding those he loved to stay close to family, to love one another, and to think positively in all circumstances. If you ever needed someone to talk to, it didn’t matter what time of day it was; he was there, listening with patience, understanding, and genuine care. He would help anyone in need, whether a lifelong friend or a complete stranger, offering support without hesitation. Above all, Melvin deeply loved his family. His faith in God guided him throughout his life, and he prayed with sincerity and conviction. He lovingly cared for his mother and father when they needed help, showing the same devotion to them that he showed to everyone he cherished.

Melvin is survived by his brother, Allen Stroud; nephews Jackson Stroud, Will Stroud, and Noah Stroud; niece Caroline Hampton; and great-niece Scarlett Hampton. His family will forever carry his love, strength, and generous spirit in their hearts.
