John William Hayes III passed away on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, in Hendersonville, Tennessee. Born September 15, 1956, in Metuchen, New Jersey, he was the son of the late John William "Jack" Hayes, Jr., and Ann Rebekah Russell Hayes.
John graduated from Knoxville Catholic High School in the class of 1974 before earning his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Tennessee Knoxville. He retired after more than 20 years as the IT Director at HCA, where his leadership and expertise were deeply valued.
A man of many interests and talents, John was known for his love of coin collecting, woodworking, genealogy, and boating. His keen curiosity and passion for exploring family histories underscored his deep appreciation for heritage. Beyond these hobbies, he was a spirited University of Tennessee football fan, whose enthusiasm was infectious at every game and gathering.
John's personality was as vibrant as his interests. A natural prankster with a wonderful sense of humor, he brought joy and light-heartedness into the lives of his family and friends. His exceptional skill at barbecuing was legendary, often serving as the centerpiece for gatherings where he delighted in feeding those he loved. These moments of fellowship reflected his generous spirit and commitment to nurturing relationships.
He was profoundly proud to be a grandfather, cherishing every moment with Ethan, Evan, Luke, Phoenix, Gunnar, Elijah, and Nora. John was a devout Catholic and a dedicated member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church, where his faith was a cornerstone of his life.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sisters Linda Moore and Sara Hayes.
John is lovingly survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Angie Fulkerson Hayes; his children, John (Karyn) Hayes IV, Philip (Michelle) Hayes, and Kristin (Josh Pruitt) Hayes; his siblings, Patty Needham, Debbie Marshall, Jolie Hayes, and Don (Mandy) Hayes; and his grandchildren, who brought him immeasurable joy and pride.
Family, friends, and all who knew John are invited to honor his memory with the following services: Visitation will be held on Monday, May 18, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., followed by a Rosary beginning at 6:30 p.m., both at the Alexander Funeral Home & Cremation Center located at 584 Nashville Pike, Gallatin. A Funeral Mass remembering John's life will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 19, at 1:30 p.m. at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 449 N Water Ave, Gallatin, with Father Richard Childress serving as Celebrant. Following Mass, burial will be held at Sumner Memorial Gardens, 420 Albert Gallatin Ave, Gallatin.
John’s life was a testament to the power of faith, family, and friendship. His warmth, humor, and generosity will be deeply missed, but the memories he created and the love he shared will endure in the hearts of all who knew him.
