Obituary

Lydia Sabo, a devoted nurse and cherished family matriarch, passed away on Saturday, April 25, 2026, in Gallatin, Tennessee. Born on August 18, 1932, in Somerville, New Jersey (and raised in nearby Manville, New Jersey), she was the daughter of the late Zachary Evtushek and Paline Legedza Evtushek.  Lydia’s life was marked by dedication, compassion, and a deep commitment to her family and community.

Lydia’s distinguished career was rooted at the Somerset Medical Center, where she was born, trained and employed throughout her professional life. As a proud nurse, she exemplified the highest standards of care and compassion, qualities that earned her the respect and admiration of colleagues and patients alike. Her career was a testament to her unwavering dedication to the well-being of others, a hallmark that defined her both professionally and personally.

Outside the professional realm, Lydia was lovingly known as Grandma Giddy, a moniker that reflected her sunny disposition and joyful spirit. She was an outgoing and lively woman who relished conversation, often bringing warmth and cheer to those around her. Despite her exuberance and occasional penchant for talkativeness, her presence was always a source of comfort and joy to friends and family.

Lydia treasured moments spent at the family’s treasured lake house, affectionately dubbed "the cabin," located on Lake Wallenpaupack in Pennsylvania. These occasions were filled with laughter and connection, where she delighted in the company of her loved ones, enveloped by the serene beauty of nature. As an old-school homemaker, Lydia was steadfast in her support for her husband and children, nurturing a home filled with love, care, and unwavering support.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Robert Stanley Sabo and sister Anne Evtuslek Siek.

She is survived by her sons, Robert S. (Nes) Sabo and David Z. (Lelani) Sabo, who carry forward her legacy of kindness, strength, and familial devotion. Lydia’s memory will forever reside in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know her—a beacon of happiness and dedication.

Lydia’s life was a tapestry woven with care, love, and a commitment to service, leaving a lasting imprint on her community and her family. Her family would like to extend a special thank you to Rosemary Cottage in Gallatin, as well as Highpoint Hospice for their wonderful care of Lydia.  She will be laid to rest alongside her family in Bound Brook Cemetery in Somerset, New Jersey.
