Joe David Cox, M.D.

September 28, 1933 — March 15, 2023

Gallatin,TN

Joe David Cox, M.D., age 89 of Gallatin, TN, passed away after a brief illness on March 15, 2023.  Dr. Cox was born September 28, 1933, in Prescott, AR.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Gordon Felix and Maxine Dye Cox; daughter, Rebecca Jane Cox and brother, Max Gordon Cox.  He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Jane Massey Cox; daughters, Pamela Jane Cox and Molly Williams (Richard); son, John David Cox; brother, John Cox (Elaine); grandchildren, Kyle Williams (Julie), Matthew Williams (Rebecca), Callie Revilla (Gabriel), Allison Cox and Jane Cox and 4 great grandchildren.

Dr. Cox served in the U. S. Army from 1954-1956.  He graduated September 1961 from University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Memphis, TN.  Dr. Cox served his residency at Baptist Hospital in Nashville, TN.   He started his medical career in Oceana, WV before opening his practice in 1965 in Gallatin, TN.  Dr. Cox continued practicing medicine for over 50 years and in his later years joined Sumner Medical Group.  He willingly shared his wealth of knowledge, especially cardiac knowledge, as the first intensive care unit was launched at Sumner Regional in October 1971. He was instrumental in persuading administrator, Sam Belote, to hire an experienced cardiac nurse from Nashville to organize and teach the nursing staff.  Dr. Cox was often involved in teaching nurses one on one.  He was well known for being a great diagnostician and for always putting patient care first and foremost. He never stopped learning as medicine changed drastically and he never fell behind.  Dr. Cox was a true detective picking up on subtle clues from his patients.

He was a member of Gallatin Church of Christ, King Solomon Masonic Lodge #6, Nashville Valley Scottish Rite and Al Menah Shriners Temple where he was in the Clown Unit.  Dr. Cox loved traveling with his wife and their favorite trip was to Ireland.  He enjoyed hiking and was proud that he hiked Mount LeConte in the Great Smokey Mountains.  He was an avid golfer and reader and enjoyed tracing his family history with his brother John.  Of all of the things he loved, his favorite was spending time with his family.

Funeral Service will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 18th at Gallatin Church of Christ with Brother Julius Hovan, Brother Eric Whelchel and Eddie Mayberry officiating.  Visitation will be 12:00 noon until time of service at the church. Private family interment will be in Crestview Memory Gardens with Kyle Williams, Lucien Borders, Joel Cox, Keith Heyboer, Nathan Vanatta and Mark Pruett serving as pallbearers.  Honorary pallbearers will be doctors and nurses at Sumner Regional Medical Center and the Arthur Rutledge Sunday school class at Gallatin Church of Christ.

Dr. Cox would like to thank the dedicated nurses he worked with for so many years, especially Brook Dorris, Christine Cox, Darlene Goad; his esteemed associates, especially Dr. Sid King (whom he admires deeply) for his camaraderie in so many joint ventures over the years, and Dr. Steve Bennett, whom he chose as his personal physician.  Lastly, a very special thank you to Dr. Kevin Childers and the High Point Hospice team.  Special thanks to Gwen Cox Dixon for all of her support during this time.

In lieu of flowers, if so desired, memorial donations may be made to the Arthur Rutledge Sunday school class, Gallatin Church of Christ, 150 East Main Street, Gallatin, TN  37066.
