Josephus M. Utley, age 82, of Gallatin, TN, passed away at Bellemead Place on Friday, May 12th, 2023. Josephus was born in Franklin, KY to parents, Floyd Utley and Della Black, on April 17th, 1941. Mr. Utley is preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Della, his wife, Delilah Utley, and his brothers and sisters, Lewis Utley, Wanda Utley, Thomas Utley, and Shirley Pirkle. Josephus is survived by his two brothers, Royce Sadler, and Clinton Sadler, and one sister Tessie Sadler. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Tommy Pond, Ritchie Pond,Terri Hewitt, Kim Rippy, Shawn Utley, Sharilyn Hall, Royce Sadler Jr., Heather Sadler, Jeremy Sadler, Dana Sadler, and Shanon Sadler.
Josephus was a member of the United States Army, serving three tours in Vietnam. While he was in the army, he had the opportunity to travel and see the world. After his retirement from the army, he joined the Gallatin Police Department. From the early 70s to the early 90s, Josephus loved serving his community and taking care of those in need. It made him to be a well respected and adored by his community. After his retirement from the army and the police force, Mr. Utley spent his time relaxing. He was an extremely talented painter. He would paint the landscapes of mountains and open spaces, filling the empty spaces of his home with beautiful artwork. If he wasn’t spending time painting, he would be in front of the television watching sports. An avid baseball and football fan, he loved the Atlanta Braves, Titans, and Alabama football. Although he is gone, he is not forgotten.
A visitation and funeral service will be held at Alexander Funeral Home and Cremation Center on Wednesday, May 17th, 2023, from 9am until 2pm, with our service starting at 2pm in the funeral home’s chapel.
